My journey and that of Inevitable Wealth Coaching started back in 1991. I was hired by a financial services company that I was thrilled to go to work for. The reason for that was that I was going to be working at an office where a lot of guys I had caddied for growing up were working. Their lifestyle, driving nice cars, playing gold three to four days a week, wearing nice suits, always having lots of cash in their pockets, and being given a great deal of respect were things that really appealed to me. Add to that the fact that I was going to be learning how to help people become more affluent and happy, what could be better.

Now I knew absolutely nothing about investing when I started out, but that was o.k. The guys I was working with did. In my mind, all I had to do was what I saw them doing. That meant recommending the same products and money managers they were promoting, and why wouldn’t I? By all appearances, they knew what they were talking about.

A few years in, I am not exactly where I want to be. The income isn’t, nor is my knowledge about what I am actually doing, but s far as I am concerned. It will come. However, something a little odd is happening. The funds and fund managers the guys had been touting and who I had used to attract clients accounts were not performing as they had, some in fact are at a negative. Why? I don’t really understand and start looking to the branch manager and veterans for some answers. Given, my rookie like status, I am uncomfortable asking too many questions and reveal my lack of knowledge or show any lack of confidence in what the firm is doing.

Now the problem starts to fester. On the one hand I am trying to build a business and attract clients. I have a variety of funds and fund managers who are not performing as advertised and I don’t understand why. What makes matters even worse is the fact that the people I was counting on to give me the answers didn’t have any and over the few years I had been their I had convinced people to invest their life savings with me. The vision I kept reliving in my mind was one of my clients losing fifty percent of their life’s savings in one of the products I had recommended to them. They are stunned and upset and come to me looking for answers as to why this terrible thing just happened to them and I have no explanation for them or solutions on how to fix it. All the joy and anticipation I had experienced walking into the office that first day had disappeared. In just a few short years, I went from joy to scared, worried, confused, broke, and desperate for answers. I was at a crossroads. I had to, either, find another way to help people make better decisions with their investments or get out of that business all together.

This is when the good Lord shined on me. I was introduced to Mark Matson who had recently started up a money management firm. I went out to Cincinnati, Ohio to give the investment business one final try. This is where I got my life’s calling. Mark introduced me to four gentlemen who had recently won a Nobel Prize for their research in investing. Harold Markowitz, Eugene Fama, Myron Scholes, Rex Sinqufield, and William Sharpe’s work helped me to see the world of investing in a whole new and much more empowering light. They helped me to see that markets work in a very different way from how the media and investment industry would have us believe. They helped me to see that my thinking and behaving around investing were based on myths. These myths were more for the profit of the investment industry rather the investor’s financial security.

Now that I knew how markets actually worked and had the freedom, empowerment, and joy that comes with that knowledge, I could and have used it to pursue and create for others what I really wanted to create in the world and that is love and generosity. That is what I have been doing for almost twenty five years now.
